A long time ago, sometime in 2010, I had a very persistent infestation of thread algae, beard algae and blue-green algae. I had already tried everything and spent a fortune on materials. With no results, of course. I almost quit my hobby, it was that bad …
Until I asked for help on an American forum (The Barr Report). The advice I got there was quite controversial with what I had been doing all these years. I had nothing left to lose, so I thought, “why not?”. A few months later and my aquarium finally looked like a real planted aquarium again.
HOW IT WENT ON AFTER THAT ...
THE START OF THE BLOG
In 2012 I started a blog with 1 goal. To help people get an algae-free aquarium, using the advice I had received myself. Good advice in the form of easy and understandable articles that you could apply immediately.
Meanwhile, AquascapingBlog has grown into a blog with more than 40,000 monthly readers and my e-book has been downloaded almost 4,000 times. A big THANK YOU for that!
THE PLANTEDBOX SEED WAS PLANTED
You know what I noticed on my blog? Many readers asked me what materials to use for beautiful, healthy plants. Or which aquarium fertilizer was needed for the best results. Often they couldn’t see the forest for the trees, they invested a lot of money in things that weren’t really necessary and their aquarium was never really how they wanted it.
That’s when the PlantedBox seed was planted: why not create the products my readers were asking for?

After a lot of testing and with my little bit of savings, I then started PlantedBox together with my girlfriend with the same goal as my blog: helping aquarists to have a healthier aquarium by combining the right advice with the right products. What to expect.

Meanwhile, we already received more than 2700 reviews with an average score of 4.8/5. Thank you for that! In 2019 I invested in a completely new website, wrote some free e-books and created an improved system to advise you via email. We also launched our own line of CO2 pressure regulators, CO2 bottles and accessories in 2019, another milestone!
AND WE’RE GOING INTERNATIONAL!
In 2022 we pushed a completely new website live, fully customized for PlantedBox. The AquascapingBlog site was also given a major overhaul. We also launched a French and English version of our website and started searching for new local distributors in the Netherlands and other countries.
Finally, we launched a brand new model of CO2 pressure regulator, our very first aquasoil and a new “Lean Dosing” All-in-One fertilizer.
